Claiming that Home Minister P Chidambaram is a part of the 2G scam the BJP led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has decided to boycott him in the winter session of the Parliament.

The first week of the winter session of Parliament 2011 has ended and no substantial business has been transacted yet due to unending protests over inflation, corruption, and now the FDI in retail. But the main credit for the parliament logjam goes to the BJP’S decision of boycotting Home Minister, P. Chidambaram on the 2G issue.  Demanding his immediate resignation, the BJP has decided not to permit him to speak in the House by either shouting slogans or by rushing to the well of the House.

P. Chidambaram was the Finance Minister in 2008 when the 2G scam took pace.

“The then Finance Minister P Chidambaram was equally culpable as the then Telecom Minister A Raja in the 2G spectrum case. Until his resignation is accepted, we will continue to boycott him in Parliament,” said BJP leader SS Ahluwalia.

This decision by the BJP is seen as a part of its overall strategy to trade its gun against an already battered UPA government. What the BJP seems to have forgotten is that if it wants to make its point and has to bring the government to the highest point of scrutiny, it can only be done by letting the legal process take its course.

Even the second day of the winter session made no progress with both Houses of Parliament adjourned on Wednesday as an aggressive opposition questioned the government on issues of price rise and black money.

The government along with the opposition is required to pass 21 bills and introduce 31 new bills. There are some game changer bills and policy reforms which the government has lined up such as the Lokpal Bill, the Whistleblower’s Bill, Judicial Standard’s Accountability Bill, National Food Security Bill, etc. but it is feared that the opposition’s unyielding moves will once again result into parliament paralysis as we saw during the previous session.

The CPI (M) and the Samajwadi Party did not support the opposition’s move to boycott the Home Minister.  “We will discuss the issue in our party and decide on it,” SP leader Mulayam Singh Yadav told reporters outside Parliament House when asked about his stand on the NDA call.

The government has already appealed to the opposition to let the Parliament function smoothly.  Though one week has been squandered away in disruptions, chaos, protests, sound and fury, the government along with the opposition should now make sure that they focus on some crucial issues keeping the Indian growth story alive.
